The player controls a character using a combination of point-and-click and direct control. Some choices are more significant than others, and at the end of each Book the game provides some hint of the amount of significance each of the player's choices will have on the story, as well as displaying the percentage of players who also made the same choice. The game was released in five "Books", each of which has its own story arc, and players' choices will carry over into subsequent installments. Dreamfall Chapters continues the story of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey from the moment where the previous game left off.
